Gov't, ruling party to push for passage of special semiconductor industry bill | Yonhap News Agency
SEOUL, Oct. 29 (Yonhap) — The government and the ruling People Power Party (PPP) agreed to push for the passage of a special bill supporting the semiconductor industry before the end of the current parliamentary session in December, a lawmaker said Tuesday.
The special bill contains the basis for the government to provide tax, financial and infrastructure support to the semiconductor industry, while also calling for the establishment of a special committee to handle the sector.
Government and PPP officials also agreed during a meeting Tuesday to push for revisions to the criminal code to outlaw “public threats” and carrying weapons in public, a measure aimed at deterring random and unprompted violent crimes, Rep. Kim Sang-hoon, the PPP’s top policymaker, said during a briefing.
“We will exchange the list of bills discussed today for the list of bills pushed by the opposition party,” Kim said, adding the exchange will likely take place Friday or next Monday. “The two parties’ senior deputy floor leaders will coordinate, and then each standing committee will independently review and decide (on the bills).”
The list also includes a bill on providing a stable power supply to the chip and other cutting-edge industries, a bill on extending tax credits for technologies used by advanced industries, and a bill promoting the artificial intelligence sector.
The government and the PPP also agreed to take steps to abolish a law banning mobile carriers from providing excessive discounts to customers.
The aim is to complete the steps and pass the bills before Dec. 9, when the current parliamentary session ends.
