The US-based mobile and PC processor maker Qualcomm Inc., said that the multinational would continue with its ongoing localisation efforts, and is expected to partner with the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“I think in India, global partnerships are going to be important. I will not make a commitment right now, but in cricket, which is like a religion in India, we are evaluating that particular partnership to come in,” Sumit Sonal, chief marketing officer, Qualcomm India said, adding that the IPL opportunity is under evaluation.
Founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007, the Indian Premier League or IPL is a men’s Twenty20 (T20) cricket league held annually in India, with consumer brands such as Tata, Pepsi and Vivo associated as title sponsors in the past.
“It’s great to see India making strides in order to move in that (progressive) direction in a very short time.” Don McGuire, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, Qualcomm said, adding that the company’s India unit has enlarged its talent pool, helping it to build the brand and expand partner ecosystem locally.
McGuire was speaking on the sidelines of Snapdragon Insiders Elite Festival in Gurugram on Thursday.
The company is focussing on the India market, and early this year set up a new design centre in Chennai, to primarily focus on wireless connectivity solutions and Wi-Fi technologies.
The top executive further said that the company would align more resources in India, and continue to expand across devices that impact everyday life including mobile phones, personal computers (PC), watches, glasses, and cars.
The San Diego-based multinational is banking heavily on its flagship suite of system-on-chip (SoC) Snapdragon semiconductor products for mobile devices.
“Snapdragon is a part of digital life. I am very proud of the work (India team) have done.”
Replacing the German company TeamViewer, Snapdragon has become a primary shirt sponsor for English football club Manchester United in the 2024–2025 season.
Cristiano Amon-headed company unveiled its first Snapdragon-branded product in December 2007, using CPU based on Qualcomm’s Scorpion microarchitecture.
Qualcomm’s newest SoC, designed and developed for premium smartphones – Snapdragon 8 Elite has already seen many takers such as Xiaomi, Asus, Honor, iQOO, Oppo, Realme, Vivo, OnePlus and Samsung.
