English can put Welsh to the sword
The second round of the 2024 Six Nations throws up one of rugby union’s great rivalries as England play host to Wales.
Steve Borthwick’s men head into their first home game of this year’s competition at Twickenham on the back of a hard-fought 27-24 win against Italy in Rome, while Wales almost produced one of the great comebacks against Scotland but eventually ended up on the wrong end of a 27-26 scoreline in Cardiff.
No quarter will be asked or given in west London on Saturday and it could end with the English adding to Welsh woes.
Things could get tougher before they get better for Wales, as this side goes through a transitional phase after the retirement of some key figures.
The likes of Alun Wyn Jones and Dan Biggar have called time on their international careers and the next generation are beginning to come through the ranks.
In Cardiff last week, the best and the worst of what can be expected of the Welsh in this Six Nations was on full display. The hosts were dire in the first 45 minutes of the contest against the Scots but were dominant for the final 35, and nearly ran out winners against Gregor Townsend’s shell-shocked side.
England will have been drilled not to make the same disciplinary mistakes as Scotland, who played with 14 men for most of that second half last weekend as Wales took the advantage and the momentum swung.
The Red Rose are tough to beat on their own patch and are unlikely to let up if they do go ahead. Overcoming a -13 handicap is certainly achievable against a Welsh defence that leaked 27 points in the first 45 minutes against the Scots.
England vs Wales tip 1: England -13 handicap @ 11/10 with BoyleSports
Mitchell a menace around the breakdown
Playing some outstanding rugby for Northampton Saints this season, Alex Mitchell has made the No 9 England jersey his own.
A tryscoring performance capped off a solid showing in Rome last weekend, and he and the rest of the English set-up will be determined to progress against Wales and keep their hopes of a Six Nations title alive.
Mitchell has the rugby intelligence and physical attributes to not only spot space but also exploit it, with the speed to pick up and go around the breakdown or end up scoring on a support line. He is definitely one to look out for in the anytime tryscorer market.
England vs Wales tip 2: Alex Mitchell anytime tryscorer @ 19/10 with BoyleSports
Skipper George great value to land individual accolade
Handed the armband after Saracens teammate Owen Farrell pulled out of selection for this year’s Six Nations, Jamie George made a winning start as captain against the Azzurri.
England have been getting back to their strengths in recent games and their set-piece ability will be a key factor against the Welsh.
With the English mauling game at lineout time near the Wales line expected to cause the visitors problems, it would be little surprise to see the Sarries man power over from close range.
If the England lineout and scrum go well and George does touch down for a try or two, the skipper will certainly be in the mix to be named man of the match
England vs Wales tip 3: Jamie George man of the match @ 16/1 with BoyleSports
