As Gujarat chases its dream to be a semiconductor hub, the state’s Education Department is doing its bit to bridge the manpower shortage in the sector. As part of this plan, the department is set to have a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in semiconductors at city-based LD Engineering College (LDCE) and the Government Engineering College (GEC), Rajkot.
The CoE in semiconductors is one of the 8 CoEs planned by the Education Department in different government engineering colleges of the state in emerging engineering areas like Artificial Intelligence and Drone Technology among others.
Officials in know of the development said after the department floated tenders for the same, two agencies have expressed their interest in setting up a CoE in semiconductors. The department is likely to assign the work after polling in the state gets over on May 7.
Officials said Rs 3 crore has been allotted for each CoE.
“Setting up the Rs3 crore CoE for semiconductors is part of a larger plan to set up a state-of-the-art CoE in semiconductors. The proposal for the same has been sent to the state government’s Science and Technology Department,” said a source. The source said the department’s nod is awaited but one of the 8 CoEs to be set up at LDEC will play a crucial role in sensitising and training manpower for the semiconductor companies which are setting up shops in the state.
A senior official in the Education Department said the CoEs aim to have state-of-the-art laboratories to carry out semiconductor-related practicals. “LDEC is a natural choice not only because it has a locational benefit but also because it is one of the oldest government colleges in Gujarat,” said the official.
The official said as most of the semiconductor industry is coming up near Ahmedabad, the idea is to have a centre that not only offers short-term courses to train manpower in the area but also turns out to be an important centre to carry out all kinds of research in the area of semiconductor. “This includes independent research or research with the industries and for the industries,” said the official.
