Gujarat Chief Minister Vows Support for Semiconductor Industry | Ahmedabad News – Times of India
Ahmedabad: Gujarat govt will provide full support to the semiconductor industry, assured chief minister Bhupendra Patel as the state readies itself to become a major hub for semiconductor manufacturing. He was delivering the keynote address at the inaugural ceremony of the ‘Gujarat SemiConnect Conference 2024’ held at the Mahatma Mandir Exhibition and Convention Centre in Gandhinagar on Friday.
“Gujarat is the first Indian state with a dedicated semiconductor policy. Within months of its introduction in 2020, Micron Technology decided to set up a chip manufacturing plant here, and we allocated land at Sanand in a week.” He also spoke of the plug-and-play facilities at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) that are designed to attract more semiconductor companies.
Principal secretary (science and technology) Mona Khandhar detailed the state’s upcoming projects. “Micron has activated its temporary facilities, and its Rs 22,500 crore assembly, testing, marking, and packing (ATMP) facility in Sanand is set to launch next year. In partnership with PSMC Taiwan, Tata Electronics will build a Rs 91,000 crore semiconductor fabrication unit in Dholera, starting operations by 2026. Additionally, with Japan’s Renesas, CG Power is preparing a Rs 7,600 crore OSAT facility in Sanand, expected to be operational by 2025,” Khandhar said.
“As these clusters in Sanand and Dholera develop, they will require further investment in logistics and physical infrastructure to support the semiconductor supply chain,” said Gursharan Singh, senior VP at Micron Technologies.
Arun Murugappan, chairman of Tube Investments, called for infrastructure akin to Taiwan’s semiconductor clusters. “To ensure India’s success in semiconductors, we need robust infrastructure, including power, water and connectivity, and the co-location of raw material suppliers, equipment suppliers, research institutions and universities,” he said.
Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, announced that the company has committed $11bn to its semiconductor fab project, creating over 20,000 jobs and involving over 2,000 ecosystem partners. “As we build India’s first greenfield AI-enabled fab, a key focus is to promote local industry,” he said.
On the sidelines of the conference, CM Patel met with key figures including Thakur, Singh, Murugappan, and Girish Aggarwal of Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd.
