INOX Group, IISc join hands to set up quantum materials lab, boost semiconductor research – ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: In a significant step towards advancing quantum technology and semiconductor research in India, INOX Group and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the INOX Quantum Materials Lab. The lab will be located at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) facility at IISc, with a focus on the development of topological semiconductors—critical materials for achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The lab aims to build an indigenous Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) unit that will eventually be commercialised. This initiative is expected to make advanced semiconductor and quantum technology more accessible and cost-effective, reducing the high costs associated with importing equipment. The collaboration also intends to foster human resource development in the field by providing internship opportunities to undergraduates and organising annual workshops on quantum technologies.

Siddharth Jain, Director, INOX Group, said, “At INOX, we believe in the power of innovation and its ability to drive future progress. Our contribution towards building the INOX Quantum Materials Lab at IISc reflects our commitment to advancing scientific research and supporting India’s leadership in cutting-edge quantum technology.”

Professor Srinivasan Raghavan, Chair of CeNSE, IISc, said, “This collaboration marks a significant step in making advanced technologies more affordable and accessible while driving research in quantum technology and materials. With INOX Group’s support, we will enhance our lab infrastructure, develop essential tools, and promote technology transfer, ultimately benefiting both industry and society.”

The lab’s research will also focus on topological insulators, epitaxial ferromagnetic semiconductors, and other quantum materials. In addition to research, the lab will foster publication of papers and participation in global conferences, contributing to the development of skilled human resources in India’s growing semiconductor and quantum sectors.

INOX Group’s subsidiaries, INOX Air Products and INOX India Ltd, will contribute to the development of the lab as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. INOX Air Products is India’s largest industrial gas manufacturer, while INOX India Ltd is a global leader in cryogenic equipment. Both companies play pivotal roles in advancing the application of quantum technology and strengthening the semiconductor industry globally.
