Korea and the European Union (EU) are set to hold their first joint forum for semiconductor researchers in Belgium this week as part of their efforts to deepen their bilateral digital partnership, Seoul’s science ministry said Monday.

The two-day Korea-EU Joint Researcher Forum on Semiconductors will take place in Brussels through Tuesday (local time) to discuss research on semiconductor materials, neuromorphic computing, advanced chips and chip packaging, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The forum comes as a follow-up to the digital partnership signed by Korea and the EU in 2022 to enhance the two sides’ technological cooperation.

The EU and Korea will take turns to host the annual forum starting this year.

The ministry said they will also select four research projects on the heterogeneous integration of semiconductors and neuromorphic chips in July, which will be co-funded by the Korean government and the European Commission.

“We are at a major crossroads in the intensifying competition surrounding hegemony in chip technology and the shift in the technological paradigm,” Science Minister Lee Jong-ho, said, noting cooperation with the EU will help Korea improve its competitiveness in the industry. (Yonhap)
