Maharashtra Launches First Semiconductor Assembly Unit: A Game Changer for the Tech Industry | Mumbai News – Times of India
Mumbai: An Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) unit was inaugurated at Navi Mumbai on Wednesday in the presence of chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The unit, Maharashtra‘s first in the semiconductor sector, is being set up by RRP Electronics Pvt Ltd with an investment of Rs 12,000 crore in the first phase and Rs 24,000 crore in the second phase, said Shinde.
Fadnavis said that while other states were still inviting investments, Maharashtra had already declared its IT Policy in May last year and publicized its incentives. Shinde assured complete support from the govt for the unit, which has cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar as a strategic investor.
Fadnavis said India needed its own semiconductor chip manufacturing units, given the vulnerability of global supply chains. He pointed out that the cabinet sub-committee recently approved a joint venture between Adani Group and Israeli company Tower Semiconductor, signaling growing interest in this sector.
Addressing opposition claims of industries leaving Maharashtra, Shinde said industries do not move overnight and blamed previous govts for not providing adequate support. He said over 70% of MoUs signed at the Davos meet have been executed. RRP’s Rajesh Chodhankar said the first chips will be available for the market by 2026, and the facility will provide employment to approximately 4,000 people in phase I.
Establishment of the OSAT unit in Navi Mumbai is expected to attract further investments in the semiconductor industry and create an ecosystem for high-tech manufacturing in the state.
