News and Events – Students invited to attend event focused on semiconductor careers March 17

On March 17, students from the Rolla area will have an opportunity to learn more about careers in the semiconductor industry at the SEMI Professional Development Seminar organized by the SEMI Midwest Chapter in collaboration with Missouri S&T.

Students from Missouri S&T, other area colleges and local high schools with an interest in semiconductor industry careers can register to attend the free event at S&T’s Havener Center. Lunch will be provided, and students can come and go as their schedule allows.

“The semiconductor industry will need tens of thousands of new employees to keep up with its workforce demands over the next several years,” says Dr. David Borrok, vice provost and dean of Missouri S&T’s College of Engineering and Computing. “Microelectronic chips and semiconductor devices are vital for our modern society, and this information and networking event will give students valuable exposure to the industry and what it entails.”

Check-in for the event begins at 9 a.m., and it will conclude at 2 p.m. The day’s agenda includes an introduction of the SEMI Midwest Chapter, a brief history of the industry and career pathways, talks with industry leaders, personal branding and interview guidance, a session on job and internship opportunities, and networking opportunities.

Missouri S&T’s educational opportunities will also be covered. In fall 2025, the university will launch a new bachelor’s degree program in semiconductor engineering.

Borrok says another aspect of the event students will appreciate is the “Ask me anything”-style panel discussion titled “A Day in the Life of a Semiconductor Engineer.”

“This will be a great time for students to ask a variety of questions about the ins and outs of working in this field and learn why it is so rewarding,” he says. “It will be a comfortable space for students to get some honest, immediate insights.”
