Peoria residents push back against approved semiconductor facility

PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — Peoria residents showed up to a city council meeting Tuesday night in protest of an approved chip factory, even though the project was not on the agenda.

Peoria City Council approved the project for an Amkor chip facility last year, likely bringing a 55-acre chip manufacturer near the Vistancia neighborhood in north Peoria.

City leaders are touting that the project is expected to bring around 2,000 jobs to the area. Residents said the project is bigger than they were originally told, and on Tuesday night, they voiced their concerns, including alleged pollution and congestion that the facility would bring.

“That thing should not be in a planned community; it should be in an industrial park for a variety of reasons,” said Steve Riggins, who lives in the Vistancia neighborhood.

Peoria officials said they addressed all the concerns on the city’s website and said the project is a done deal.

“It was a great investment to the West Valley to let people work and live in the same community,” Peoria City Manager Mike Faust said. “We see a whole breadth of job opportunities. We view it as a great opportunity here in the city.”

Vistancia residents said they will keep showing up to council meetings or bring this issue to the courts if their voices are not heard.
