Referee commended for strong stance in England vs Wales match | Rugbydump

England and Wales under 20s faced off in an exhilarating match at Baths Recreation Ground on Friday night. The packed-out stadium showcased the greatest of up-and-coming talent within the two respective countries.

England ended the match as 28-7 victors over their close rivals, extending their win streak to two in this year’s Six Nations. The match was not without controversy, however, with both sides heavily involved in niggles throughout the occasion.

Referee, Aimee Barrett-Theron, on one occasion decided to draw the captains together to put the issues to rest. Speaking to the young England and Wales captains, Barrett-Theron challenged the two men on their abilities to lead their team.

Speaking rather curly, Smith was heard to say: “Boys, I’m not mad, I’m just really disappointed, because you both gave me buy-in before the game in the changing room that you would be able to control your players.

“So, did you lie to me or is it something you can fix from now?”

The players responded, “We can fix” and quickly returned to their respective teams.

After the video was posted online, Smith came under plenty of scrutiny from fans regarding the way she spoke to the players. Some determined it as condescending and disrespectful whilst others claimed it was actually an example of exemplary refereeing.
