Semiconductor industry providing high value employment and economic growth – The Malta Independent
The semiconductor industry, a highly advanced technological sector, is one of the new economic niches Malta capitalized on to much success, the Ministry for the Economy said.
Semiconductor technology is one of the new economic niches being developed in Malta with a primary development being the agreement between Malta Enterprise and the IMEC aimed at strengthening the research and the development in semiconductor technologies in Malta whilst incentivizing the industry, particularly with regards to start-ups in the sector of chip design.
Malta Enterprise also had a crucial role in the discussions surrounding the European Chips Act by recognizing the semiconductor industry as an essential economic driver for Malta as well as the EU, the statement added.
During a visit by Economy Minister Silvio Schembri to 4JM Solutions, it was announced that Malta will host international conferences on the sector in November focused on the Critical Role of the Global Industry of Semiconductors in which a group of renowned experts in the field will be present. It said that another initiative that will create a vibrant ecosystem to support start-ups as well as established companies in the sector is the DiHubMT.
The ministry for Economy said that 4JM Solutions started off from the Kordin Business Incubation Centre (KBIC) and grew from 13 workers in 2018 to over 50 workers whilst continuing to grow internationally with skills in the maintenance of high-standard industrial machinery as well as offering logistical help and support in Southern Europe, North Africa and Western Europe.
Schembri praised 4JM Solutions for their innovation and commitment to excellence whilst noting the company’s continuous efforts to contribute to the Maltese economy by creating high value employment with good working conditions, attracting international clients and fostering the growth of the semiconductor industry.
“The progress registered by Maltese companies that started as a dream and grew into multinational operations are inspirational. These are exactly the type of high value industry we have the aim of fostering in the country, industries that not only offer good wages but also need minimal space whilst generating significant value. As we look to the future, it is crucial that the Maltese economy continues to expand in a sustainable and strategic way. Through Malta Vision 2050, we are focused to ensure that high value industries, such as this, keep on flourishing. This will help to create a more resilient economy whilst ensuring quality employment and opportunities for future generations. 4JM Solutions’ work closely aligns with this vision by advancing the technological capacities and push the country towards a more ecological and resilient economy,” he said.
