T’gana ready to lead charge on semiconductors: IT min

Hyderabad: Telangana IT and industries minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu has urged the Centre to bring semiconductor advanced packaging and manufacturing plants (APMP) as well as assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) plants under the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to Telangana.
He made this pitch to the central govt at the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) 2024 in New Delhi during a roundtable session that saw participation from chief ministers and IT ministers of various states.
Sridhar Babu’s appeal to the Centre comes at a time when most of the semiconductor projects went to states such as Gujarat.
Making a strong case for setting up semiconductor projects in Telangana, Sridhar Babu said Telangana, which has a robust infrastructure, houses some of the largest centres of global tech giants and has a thriving start-up ecosystem, was all geared up to play a key role in India’s vision of a $10 trillion economy.
“As India moves towards over one billion smartphone users, 10 million electric vehicles, and two billion IoT devices, the demand for semiconductors will skyrocket. Telangana stands ready to lead this change, hosting global giants like NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Broadcom, as well as dynamic start-ups for both local and global markets,” he said.
“With our robust infrastructure, supportive policies, and a skilled workforce of over 3.5 lakh AI and semiconductor professionals, we are well-equipped to host APMP and ATMP units. Our vision is to achieve a $1 trillion economy while contributing to India’s goal of a $10 trillion economy. We urge the Centre to leverage Telangana’s strengths in building a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem that will enhance India’s global technology leadership,” Sridhar Babu said.
The IT Minister also sought financial support from the Centre to complete the T-Fiber initiative that aims to take high-speed internet and multi-play services to eight million households across rural and urban Telangana.
