Trump Tariffs Live Updates: Trump says there will be ‘flexibility on some companies on semiconductor tariffs, but it’s not clear’ – World News

Trump Tariffs Live Updates: US President Donald Trump attempted to clear up the confusion over new US tariffs on Chinese tech products, following a weekend full of mixed signals leading to uncertainty. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that no country—especially China—is getting a free pass when it comes to trade.

“NOBODY is getting ‘off the hook’ for the unfair Trade Balances, and Non Monetary Tariff Barriers, that other Countries have used against us, especially not China which, by far, treats us the worst!” Trump wrote.

Trump pushed back against reports suggesting exemptions for electronics like smartphones and semiconductors, saying there was no new exception announced on Friday. He clarified that these products are still covered under the existing 20% fentanyl-related tariffs, but are now being placed under a different tariff category. He also slammed the media for not accurately reporting on the subject.

This comes after a Friday evening decision from US Customs and Border Protection that temporarily spared certain tech items like smartphones, laptops, and hard drives from the planned tariffs. Many of these products are made in China, and the move brought a wave of relief across the tech industry.

However, as per CNN, Trump officials are now saying that the pause is only temporary. In various news channel appearances, they explained that the delay is part of a larger review of national security risks related to importing semiconductors—key components in many electronic devices.

Trump said his team is now looking at the entire electronics supply chain as part of upcoming national security investigations. He added that the goal remains the same: more US-made products and less reliance on other countries.

Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff, said in an interview with Fox News, that even though a more detailed list is still being prepared, all companies will have to pay at least a 20% tariff. Some products will face an even higher rate of 125%. These items are also going through a special review by the Department of Commerce.

Miller said this was “always the plan”, since these tech products are critical to US security. President Trump is using Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to justify the move, saying it’s important for the US not to rely too heavily on foreign-made electronics.
