Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, spontaneously picked up a marker and began explaining the development of India’s semiconductor ecosystem on the whiteboard in his office during a media interaction following the Centre’s nod to three more semiconductor units to be set up. The Union Cabinet approved proposals to set up three semiconductor plants, including a mega fab by Tata Group, at an investment of ₹1.26 lakh crore. The three units approved under the scheme will make chips for various sectors, including defence, automobiles, and telecommunications, and will begin construction within the next 100 days, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a media briefing after the cabinet meeting.
