UT to facilitate additional semiconductor education with 68-acre property in Taylor

The property, soon to be named the UT Austin-Taylor Center for Semiconductor Training and Research, is situated on Highway 79 near FM 973, near Taylor High School.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin (UT) is continuing to grow its tech footprint.

The university was recently able to acquire a 68-acre property in Taylor, thanks to a donation from nonprofit Temple College at Taylor Foundation, which aims to bring higher education to the city.

The property, soon to be named the UT Austin-Taylor Center for Semiconductor Training and Research, is situated on Highway 79 near FM 973, near Taylor High School.

Officials with the university say the location is ideal due to its immediate proximity to the high school, as well as its close distance to the Samsung Semiconductor plant which is about 1.5 miles away.

The project is the latest in semiconductor manufacturing and research to come to Taylor, as South Korean-based tech giant Samsung has invested roughly $44 billion into its semiconductor projects in the city.

That investment was endorsed even further after President Joe Biden announced a preliminary agreement between company and the U.S. Department of Commerce for $6.4 billion, which aids the company’s investment even more into Central Texas, and which President Biden said will cement the area’s “role as a state-of-the-art semiconductor ecosystem.”
