Vietnam is working to become a key player in the global semiconductor and AI industries, aiming to advance research, AI capabilities and workforce development. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung seeks collaboration with SEMI SEA and its members to help achieve these strategic goals, fostering innovation and growth in critical technological sectors.

The Deputy Prime Minister met with a delegation from SEMI SEA in Hanoi led by its President, Linda Tan. During this meeting, Dung outlined the Vietnamese government’s efforts to make the country a centre of excellence in semiconductor technology and AI development. He acknowledged the invaluable support that SEMI SEA has already provided in recent years, helping Vietnam advance its semiconductor industry.
Dung revealed that one of the country’s key objectives is to train 50,000 engineers for the semiconductor sector by 2030. This ambitious target is critical for ensuring that Vietnam has the human resources needed to drive innovation and development in the semiconductor and AI fields.
To achieve this, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that SEMI SEA, along with its network of industry leaders, work closely with the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance and the National Innovation Centre (NIC) to implement a training programme designed to equip the future workforce with the necessary skills.
The Vietnamese government is committed to enhancing its institutional framework to attract both foreign and local investments. Dung emphasised the government’s role in ensuring macroeconomic stability, fostering growth and providing favourable conditions for investors in the semiconductor sector, ensuring long-term success and sustainability.
Dung’s vision for the sector includes not only expanding Vietnam’s talent pool but also developing a comprehensive ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing. He outlined plans to enhance the country’s semiconductor industry across all stages of production, from design and packaging to testing and manufacturing.
In particular, he asked SEMI SEA to offer recommendations on competitive and attractive policies that could help Vietnam attract more foreign direct investment (FDI) in these critical areas.
In addition, Dung called on SEMI SEA to play an active role in promoting Vietnam’s investment environment globally, connecting investors, scientists and experts within its extensive network. He urged the association to use its platform to facilitate collaboration and explore opportunities for knowledge sharing and investment within the country.
Such connections would be instrumental in ensuring that Vietnam not only meets its goals for semiconductor production but also positions itself as a centre of AI development and innovation.
Linda Tan, President of SEMI SEA, expressed the association’s full commitment to advancing the semiconductor industry in Vietnam. She recognised the tremendous strides the country has made in this field and reiterated SEMI SEA’s dedication to supporting the government’s vision.
Tan highlighted the association’s preparation for the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2025 in November, showcasing advancements and offering networking opportunities for stakeholders and investors.
Vietnam’s efforts to grow its semiconductor industry are part of a broader push to develop its high-tech sectors. With increasing global demand for semiconductor chips, which power everything from smartphones to AI systems, the country’s focus on workforce development, industry growth and global collaboration is crucial.
The government’s proactive approach, combined with the support of SEMI SEA and other international partners, is expected to play a significant role in Vietnam’s future as a leader in technology and innovation in Southeast Asia.
By strengthening its position in the semiconductor and AI sectors, Vietnam is not only aiming to meet its domestic needs but also to become a key player in the global supply chain for high-tech products, positioning itself as a critical hub in the rapidly evolving digital economy. With the right policies, investments and training programmes, Vietnam is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goals.
