The captains

Ireland – Evan O’Connell

Nephew of former Ireland captain Paul O’Connell, the lock was part of the Ireland squad which won the Grand Slam last year and reached the final of the World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

Having already been part of Richie Murphy’s squad and capped by Munster at senior level, he will look to guide Ireland to a third Grand Slam in a row.

England – Finn Carnduff

Leicester Tigers have been known for producing England international second rows in recent years. Carnduff will look to follow Ollie Chessum and George Martin in progressing quickly through the ranks.

The 19-year-old has already played in the Premiership and can play at both flanker and lock, featuring on the flank during last season’s Under-20 Six Nations.

Wales – Harri Ackerman

The centre is another returning player from last season. The 19-year-old started against Ireland, Scotland and England and has since played at senior level for Dragons in the United Rugby Championship and Challenge Cup.

Scotland – Liam McConnell

The flanker is in his third season of Under-20 rugby after first appearing in the 2022 Summer Series for Scotland. The 19-year-old, who is contracted at Edinburgh, played the full 80 minutes in every round of the competition last season.

France – Mathis Castro-Ferreira

The Toulouse back rower has played five times this season in the Top 14 after featuring last season in the Under-20 Six Nations, with two starts and three appearances off the bench.

The 20-year-old also came on as a replacement during the World Rugby Under-20 Championship final victory over Ireland in July.

Italy – Jacopo Botturi

The number eight is a robust ball carrier and featured heavily for Italy during the Six Nations and World Rugby Under-20 Championship last season.

He will look to pick up from flanker David Odiase, who proved to be an inspiring leader for an exciting young crop of Italian talent.
