People have poked fun at the differences between the English and Welsh for years, but now two brothers have made it their full-time jobs.
Meet Ashley and Andrew Polson, 26, from Swansea – the influencers who dedicate their time to making people laugh with their hilarious tongue-in-cheek videos.
Recently the lads have gone viral due to the fact that their clips are so relatable. But, what’s crazy is, they nearly packed the social media game in just before they started raking in the hits with their cheeky TikTok videos.
The siblings have actually been creating social media content for more than five years, but they started out by making fitness videos. They admitted it got a little “boring”, so they decided to shake things up a bit.
They said: “It got to a point where everyone was doing the same thing, and it was a bit boring. We were actually thinking about giving it up and we thought to ourselves ‘do we want to do it anymore?'”
Then things took a drastic turn when they were inspired to film Welsh content. Now they make videos to highlight the differences between the English and the Welsh – but don’t worry, it’s all in good humour.
In one clip, titled ‘Walking past someone in England vs Wales’ you see how the ‘English’ bloke simply walks by with his head down, while the Welsh man stops and can’t stop chatting (at great speed!)
A similar picture is painted in a clip called ‘Speaking to someone with their headphones on in England vs Wales’ where similar characters are depicted. And, as for the video where they asked a neighbour to move their car, it left people in absolute hysterics – mostly because the Welsh bloke was happy to chuck a load of his stuff in his neighbour’s skip.
Meanwhile, “getting a taxi in England vs Wales” also left people cackling, especially at the Welsh lad sitting in the front seat chopsing away. He tells the driver he’ll have to walk so far as he didn’t have enough money to cover the fare.
In contrast, the English character is seen keeping to himself in the back with his head down.
You really need to watch the videos to capture the spirit of them, but they’re all made with good intentions to make people laugh. A lot of their content plays on stereotypes, and they say the reason Welsh people are often seen differently is because they tend to be from tightly-knit communities where everyone knows each other.
They explained: “It’s never nasty. It’s not calling people out – it’s just how it is.
“We have friends there (in England), and know people there. We get messages from people in the North saying ‘we know people like that’, and the Scottish saying they are the same. A lot of people say they relate to it.
“We’re not being nasty – we’re just showing what we’re like. We have such a good laugh in Wales, and we wanted to show that.”
It’s quite clear to see their content is relatable as, when they started posting Welsh-inspired videos, their channels blew up. After posting one video, everything changed overnight, and thousands of people started tuning in.
“Suddenly everything blew up – we couldn’t believe the reaction we were getting,” they added.
“When we were thinking about what sort of content we like to watch in videos, we thought we just like a laugh, so we decided to make people laugh.”
Perhaps what makes their content so relatable is the characters they portray are real. From the chatty neighbour to the stereotypical Welsh mam to the Welsh man abroad – they bring the people we know so well to life.
They say the best writing comes from experience, and the lads are proving in abundance.
“They’re characters – they are all based on people we know,” they added. “It’s all us, it’s ourselves on camera.
“It’s just what we think about growing up. That’s what people were like.
“So many people from Wales are loving it. A lot of Welsh people living in London love it. They say they miss home, and it makes them think about it.”
